Apple World’s Top Smartphone Vendor in Q4 2011

Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed in a report earlier today that smartphone vendors shipped 157.8 million units in 4Q 2011 compared to 102.0 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Not surprisingly, Apple took the top position with 37 million iPhones shipped in the 4Q 2011, accounting for 23.5% of the market share in the quarter.

The report points out that demand for iPhone 4S was high, even though it disappointed some users who were expecting a redesigned iPhone with a larger screen and support for 4G LTE network. It also cited that "the combination of holiday seasonality, the delay in product launch from 3Q to 4Q, and the addition of multiple mobile operators helped drive volumes higher".

Samsung took the second with 36 million smartphones shipped, accounting for 22.8% of the market share in the quarter. Nokia took the third spot with 19.6 million units shipped, followed by RIM's 13.0 million units and HTC's 10.2 million units.
