An Italian startup has recently launched an app in the App Store called MonkeyParking that lets you make money every time you leave a prime street parking spot in San Francisco.
The idea behind the app is quite simple. It allows drivers leaving prime street parking spot to auction it off to other users of the app who are willing to pay anywhere from $5 to $20 so they don’t have to waste time or fuel circling the block to find one.
As you can see from the tweets below the idea of someone making money out of public parking spots hasn’t gone down too well with some people.
The app seems to have also taken the authorities by surprise. The City Attorney’s office is investigating whether MonkeyParking’s business model is legal. “So far, all we’ve determined for sure is that it’s extremely weird,” a spokesperson told SFGate. San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is also looking into concerns about the parking app.
It may seem ridiculous that people are making money from public space they don’t own, but the idea of offering parking spots, which is a scarce commodity in the prime streets of San Francisco via markets like this is quite interesting.
Let me know what your thoughts in the comments below. If you’re in San Francisco, download MonkeyParking from the App Store (iTunes link), and let us know your experience.
