Facebook 10.0 Update brings post previews, offline posts and faster News feed

Facebook has released a major update for its iOS app.

Facebook 10.0 update includes new features such as the ability to preview posts and the ability to create posts in offline mode. The update also includes improvements to make News feed load faster.

The preview feature will allow you to review what your post will look like before publishing it.

The offline posts feature will allow you to create posts even when you have poor connectivity or in Airplane mode.

TechCrunch also reports that Facebook is testing a new Facebook Now feature, which will bring the real-time, contextual content suggestions in the feed to mobile apps. The feature will display contextual information in the form of cards.

Now Facebook is bringing context to mobile, and applying it to the most central parts of its graph: people and photos. The cards test is rolling out to a small subset of users, and uses color-coded styles with green for content, red for places, yellow for photos, and blue for birthdays.

Facebook tells me “These cards can help you discover information about where you are or what to do next, or inspire conversations with your friends around you.  This feature respects all existing privacy settings, and the card will only show you information that you could already see elsewhere on Facebook. We wanted to make it easier for you to interact with your friends about the things you’re doing and the places you are visiting.”

Here’s how the cards will look like:

Facebook is currently rolling out the feature to a small subset of users, so you may not see it immediately. Facebook also hasn’t mentioned by when it plans to roll out the feature to all users.

Here’s the complete change log of Facebook 10.0:

  • Review what your post will look like and choose whether to remove any suggested links before sharing what you’re reading, watching or listening to

  • Create posts even when your connection is weak or you’re in airplane mode, and they’ll be shared once your connection gets strong enough

  • Improvements to make News Feed load faster, especially on older phones and tablets

You can download the update for free using this direct iTunes link if the Facebook app did not get updated automatically.

Let me know what you think of the new features in Facebook 10.0, and the upcoming Facebook Now feature.

Facebook pulls its Poke and Camera apps from the iOS App Store

facebook-poke-camera

Facebook may be trying to diversify its app catalog with apps such as Messenger and Facebook Pages, but apparently not every Facebook-sanctioned app is worthy of a spot in the App Store. As noted by The Verge, the company today quietly removed its long-abandoned Poke messaging app and its Camera app that allowed users to upload photos to their Facebook account.

Both apps launched in 2012 and were infrequently updated, with Facebook Poke never seeing an update past its launch version. Facebook Camera received a few minor updates with the last one arriving in August 2013. Some of the features of the Camera app eventually were rolled into the main Facebook app, but the Poke app was all but forsaken by Facebook.

Facebook did not provide a reason for pulling Poke and Camera at this time, but it likely wanted to remove those apps that were being underutilized by its users. Facebook may be trimming its app catalog so users don’t stumble upon un-supported apps that provide a poor user experience. It also likely wants to stop supporting customers who download the abandoned apps and seek assistance when using them.

Facebook has struggled in the app marketplace, but the company has said it is committed to improving its mobile offerings. The company recently debuted its Facebook Paper app and acquired popular messaging service and app platform, WhatsApp. It also recently confirmed it was pulling messaging out the main Facebook app and integrating it into the company’s standalone Messenger app, a change that should bolster usage of its dedicated messaging app.

Here’s How You Can Save Videos Sent Through Snapchat and Facebook Poke

Here’s How You Can Save Videos Sent Through Snapchat and Facebook Poke

Snapchat and its clone Facebook Poke are apps that let users send temporary messages in the form of photos and videos, which get deleted seconds after they get viewed. The idea of spontaneous, temporary, visual messages appealed to a lot of smartphone owners, who collectively put the apps on the top charts of the App Store.
