How to mute user on Twitter for iOS

Twitter recently rolled out the ability to mute accounts, letting you mute tweets from someone you follow. In this post, we tell you how to mute tweets and retweets from annoying users using the Twitter iOS app.

Mute from a Tweet

See an annoying tweet? Here’s how to mute the person who posted it:

• Tap on the tweet you want to mute


• Tap the ••• icon


• Tap Mute and Yes, I’m sure to confirm.

Mute from a Twitter user’s profile

You can also mute a Twitter user from his or her profile:

• Go to the Twitter user’s profile


• Tap the gear (settings) icon


• Tap Mute and Yes, I’m sure to confirm

Unmute a Twitter user

If you’ve muted someone, but want to read their tweets in your timeline again, here’s how you do it:

• Visit the muted user’s profile on Twitter


• Tap the red mute icon to unmute

Apart from mute, you could also consider unfollowing, blocking or reporting a user for spam. The difference between mute and block is that with mute, you just mute the user’s tweets, while in block, along with muting tweets the user also won’t be able to interact with you. A user won’t know if you have muted their tweets, while with block a user is told that you’ve blocked him or her. It is sort of like hiding a user from the news feed in Facebook, and the user has no clue. They can continue to favortie, retweet, and reply to your tweets, and you’ll still see their interactions in your notifications tab, but their tweets and retweets won’t appear in your Timeline.

Twitter still hasn’t completed rolling out mute to all users, so if you don’t see the option to mute, you might see it in a few weeks. Let us know if you’ve got the feature, and if so, how you’ve found it till now.

Twitter officially rolling out Mute functionality to all users

Earlier this month, we told you that Twitter is rolling out mute functionality to certain users of the Twitter iOS app. Today, the social network is rolling out mute to all users on iPhone, Android and web.

From Twitter’s blog post:

Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user’s content from key parts of your Twitter experience.

Muting a user on Twitter means their Tweets and Retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user. The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to, and retweet your Tweets; you just won’t see any of that activity in your timeline. The muted user will not know that you’ve muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time.

You can mute a user by tapping “•••” on any of their tweets and selecting mute @username. Alternatively, you can go to their profile, tap on the gear icon and select mute @username. You might not see mute available to you immediately as Twitter is gradually rolling out the feature to all users in the coming weeks. For more information on Mute, visit Twitter’s support site.

Third-party Twitter clients have long offered similar, and even more advanced muting features, as we detailed here. The good news is that third-party developers will be able to tap into the mute feature via the API, so your mute list should be synced across multiple Twitter clients (provided all of them add support for it).
